7-Hydroxymitragynine, often shortened to 7-OH, is an alkaloid associated with the kratom tree, Mitragyna speciosa. It appears naturally in the leaf at low levels. That small natural supply is why a concentrated 7-OH product should not be understood as simply ground kratom leaf.
Where does 7-OH come from?
Kratom is native to Southeast Asia. Its leaves contain a mixture of alkaloids, with mitragynine generally far more abundant than 7-OH. A plant's growing conditions, the handling of harvested leaves, and the test method can all influence a reported alkaloid profile. The label on a finished product therefore tells you more about that product than a general description of kratom does.
How do producers obtain larger amounts?
Because leaves contain little 7-OH, commercial concentrates commonly involve processing mitragynine derived from kratom. The broad chemical step is oxidation: a change to the mitragynine molecule that yields 7-hydroxymitragynine. Producers then separate the desired compound from other material. This is a description of the production route, not a process that can be judged from an ingredient name alone.
Different starting material, processing conditions, and purification methods can produce different mixtures. A product advertised as “7-OH” may contain other kratom alkaloids or processing byproducts. That is why the amount of the named compound and the identity of other constituents matter.
What can a laboratory verify?
Analytical testing can measure the concentration of 7-OH, check for related alkaloids and byproducts, and screen for contaminants. A useful certificate of analysis identifies the tested batch and states the methods and results. A generic certificate, or one from a different batch, cannot establish what is in the package at hand.
Why the distinction matters
Natural occurrence does not make a concentrated product equivalent to the plant. 7-OH has opioid-receptor activity, and the FDA has raised concerns about concentrated products and their marketing. No kratom or 7-OH product is FDA-approved to treat a medical condition. Product rules also differ by location and can change, so current local requirements matter.
In brief, 7-OH exists in kratom leaves in small amounts, while the larger quantities in finished products usually reflect additional processing. The most informative questions are what the batch contains, how that was measured, and whether the product complies with current rules.
